The difference between "further" and "farther"?

Do you know the difference between these two words?

Technically, further is a figurative distance while farther is a physical distance.

So, for example, you’re only driving a little bit farther when you’re close to the next city on your road trip.

I first learned of this differentiation when reading Electric Kool Aid Acid Test. The bus that Ken Kesey and the Merry Band of Pranksters drove across the country was called “Further”.

Why does this matter?

Now, in 2020, I can see further forward in my life than I have ever seen before.

I used to always thinking about how I had no idea what the future holds.

For long spans of time in my 20’s I could only see a few months further down the road.

Would I stay in San Diego or buy another ticket across the world?

Would I rent my house out for a few months and travel or go back to Austin?

What was the future of LIVE A GREAT STORY? I had no idea beyond the summer.

But now, I can see much further down the road… for the first time.

I can see YEARS down the road.

Not clearly.

It’s still a bit fuzzy, I can’t make out all the details, but from where I’m perched, I can make out the path ahead of me.

And it’s an interesting feeling.

I can see the future.

My path is no longer uncharted.

I know what 2021 looks like.

For me, for LIVE, for my relationship, for my home…

Yeah, it could all get flipped upside down and things could change. This is always a possibility (if it happens, I’ve lived in this uncertainty for most of my life, I can handle it).

But as it looks now, I can see further.

Not farther.

It’s not a physical distance.

But definitely further…
